Fun Facts
I bet you did not know that Halloween started as a celebration to ward off ghosts. It also served to mark the end of the summer harvest and the beginning of colder and darker days. It came to existence more than 2000 years ago in the Celtic lands where they carried out big bonfires and wore costumes. As many things do, Halloween evolved from many historic events as it went through time and different places.
One particular fact you should know is where the word "Halloween" comes from.
As a consequence of the Romans conquering Celtic land, celebrations such as the commemoration of the dead were merged. All Souls' Day also called All Hallows day, was celebrated the 1st of November. Consequently, the Celtic celebration on October 31st was called All Hallows eve.
Happy Halloween!
The Art Elements Collection
For this October, the first collection to be published was Autumn themed! There are a variety of coloring pages as well as fall themed worksheets. You may find different motifs and here I will present you with a few and some ideas on how to use them.
There are leaves, pumpkins and more available.
You may find these in the Seasons Category, just select the "Autumn" tag.
Leaves
The best introduction to fall when teaching children about it is to ask them to observe the trees and describe what's happening to them. One of my favorite lessons during this time is to have kids practice their cutting skills with different shaped leaves.
Activities you can do with these pages:
Color, cut and glue - Have your students make as many leaves as they can during a determined time. Some students will make more than others and that's fine as long as they take their time to do their best. Have students write their names on each leaf and have a tree poster made ahead of time for the class to glue all their leaves. You can print these in colored paper or discuss the colors of the leaves with the students or have a free for all color tree.
Gradient coloring - Discuss how leaves change color. You can mention the science behind it. Then talk about gradients and how it's used in art (value art element). Have the kids practice making gradients to make the leaves look like they are changing color. It doesn't matter if they color outside of the outline because they can cut it and glue it on another paper.
Pumpkins
Here is an activity you can do with these pages:
Warm colors - There orange, yellow and even red pumpkins! You can make a whole lesson about warm colors during the fall (and later add a cool colors lesson during winter). You can make it a brief lesson or a whole color project by coloring, painting, cutting, and gluing. You can also use our Trace 2 Draw pumpkin to have them practice those curved lines and draw their own pumpkin.
Autumn Illustrations with words
Learning some fall words can be pretty easy when they are looking at the words and reading them as they color.
Discuss and Color - An easy no-prep lesson can be simply to discuss these Fall Vocabulary words. You can have them trace on top of the letters before coloring. I know they'll have lots of fun with the word-image collage because they'll have to turn that page all around to get to all the words.
Fall Worksheets
These worksheets can be used as independent work, finished-early worksheets, motor skill practice, or complementary to other lessons you may have planned.
Here are some suggestions:
October Month for Morning work - a little bit of math, literacy and motor skills to start the day.
Name writing - Have students draw a pumpkin that has a side for each letter of their name. Use the Trace 2 Draw pumpkin to have them practice it.
Creating artwork to give/share - If you are planning an SEL lesson about sharing, you can use the Cut and Glue pumpkins carving to have your students create a pumpkin for themselves and a pumpkin to give away. Have the students write or talk about how they feel when they share their work with others.
Could not be done with this collection without the Adult Coloring Pages have some fall vibes as well. Enjoy the collection of trees, pumpkins and some other creative illustrations. Adults and other kids will most definitely enjoy.
Thank you for reading. Have a happy Fall Season.
